In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
